  • Xavier and his younger sister, Sophie, grew up in a troubled home. Their mother had been struggling with addiction and mental health issues for years. Her battles had left the family in constant chaos and uncertainty. She attempted to seek help multiple times but was unable to maintain a stable life for Xavier and Sophie.

    Xavier tried to shield Sophie from the harsh realities of their home. He often had to take on the role of caregiver when their mother was unable to care for them. Sophie, too young to fully grasp the extent of their situation, sought comfort and security from her older brother.
    When Xavier was 12 years old and Sophie was 7, the problems began to escalate. He vividly remembers the day when there was no food on the table, and their mother was unable to take care of them. Sometimes, she wasn't even home for days.

    Authorities became involved, and they were placed in foster care where Sophie quickly found a permanent home where she was welcomed and cared for. Xavier didn't. Who wanted a pessimistic, rude little troublemaker, who didn't show any trust in adults? No one. So he was stuck in a place, where he felt disconnected and misunderstood. He struggled to adjust to the strict rules and lack of personal freedom, and he longed for a sense of control over his life. As a result, he often ran from the temporary foster home and ended up half-living on the streets, where he mostly lived off petty theft and scams. By the time he was 15, he stopped returning altogether and had turned into a street kid. It sucked sometimes, but he preferred autonomy to stability.

    He still kept tabs on his sister. From time to time he visited the neighborhood to see if she was doing good, and she was. She didn't rat him out to the grown-ups, and for a few years, they actually had a pretty tight bond. He didn't tell her about the details of how he lived, but she was just glad he hadn't left her completely.

    As time went by, Xavier had gotten pretty good at navigating life on the streets. Sure, there were numerous challenges but he found a sense of independence and the freedom that he craved. A month before he turned 18, life started to get pretty good. He was found by what he'd call good people with questionable jobs. They saw potential in him, something no one ever had. To most, he was a lost cause, but these people were willing to give him a roof over his head and an income if he worked for them. They even taught him some pretty handy shit. Sure, he lost some autonomy, but it was worth it. The only downside was, that he had to stop contacting Sophie. Not because his new family asked him to, but because he didn't want her to get involved with his new life. At first, he felt like he had betrayed her. But every time he checked to see how she was doing, he became more and more sure it had been the right thing to do.
